In Parliament: Mary Robinson Champions Whistleblowing Bill in the Backdrop of Post Office Scandal

In a recent parliamentary exchange, Chair of the APPG for Whistleblowing Mary Robinson MP passionately advocated for the rights of whistleblowers, champion the vital need to support and protect those who expose wrongdoing. She commended the efforts of her colleague, Kevin Hollinrake MP, as the minister responsible for the Government’s response to the Post Office Scandal, in addressing the plight of whistleblowers and ensuring their compensation and the expunging of unjust criminal convictions from their records. Mary Robinson pointed out the shortcomings of the current legislation, the Public Interest Disclosure Act (1998), and called for a comprehensive review to rectify these deficiencies. She continues to work with fellow members of the APPG to deliver new legislation in the form of the Whistleblowing Bill, and to establish an Office of the Whistleblower.

In response, Kemi Badenoch MP expressed gratitude for Robinson's dedication and acknowledged the recurring importance of whistleblowing frameworks. The Trade Minister pledged to reevaluate the existing framework, recognising its significance in protecting whistleblowers and ensuring transparency. While refraining from commenting on Robinson's private Member’s Bill without reviewing it, Badenoch's acknowledgment of the need for reconsideration underscores the ongoing commitment to addressing these crucial issues.

This exchange highlights the ongoing efforts within Parliament to support whistleblowers and strengthen the legal framework to safeguard their rights. It emphasizes the significance of transparency, accountability, and justice in upholding democratic values and protecting those who bravely speak out against misconduct.
